Went to the store yesterday to get more sunflower seeds and wild bird seeds, and in my small town, there aren't many stores, and all but one still had the sunflower seeds.  Because of the cold weather up north, we're getting a lot of new birds, and I guess everyone else in town is too.

I'm glad that the people here are taking care of our fun critters!

Here we are coming into a new year!  Hoping this one will be a good one for everyone.
It's been pretty cold here lately, and we have some hungry critters that I'm feeding sometimes three times a day.  =)  That's ok, I get good pictures, I put them on products in my shops, and they pay for their own food.  =)     The Blue Jays will try to stuff their beaks as full as they can each time they come to the feeder.  Very entertaining!

11-01-09

Our weather here in MS is finally getting to feel like fall, cool and crispy.  The birds and squirrels have beautiful feathers and fur now!  Great for more picture taking!  I think this is my favorite time of the year.

9-25-09

Like most of the Southeast, we've been having a lot of rain for the last couple of weeks.  The birds don't mind at all, but the squirrels don't come out much unless there is a break in the weather.  Everything is so muddy, I haven't seen a nice white tummy on the squirrels in weeks, they're all brown.  =)

8-16-09

We were getting too many cats around our feeders, so we took them down for a week so the cats wouldn't come around.  Now that we put them back up and much safer, we have a lot more birds.  I can't wait until fall comes and they start getting their beautiful feathers.  Right now they are molting, and not picture ready.  =)

7-19-09

We have a large amount of Blue Jays this year, a lot of familiar grown ups and lots of new babies.  We have wild cats that live near us, and when one comes around, all the Blue Jays start squawking together and make quite a racket.
The cats don't seem that afraid, but they do finally mosey off.
It's amazing how loud a group of Blue Jays can get!

6-24-09

I love watching the new birds at my feeders.  The babies can feed themselves, but whenever a parent comes, they flap their wings like they're helpless and, the parents feed them!

Watching them try to drink from the water bowl is fun, too.  =)

5-30-09

My Cardinals are starting to molt, and not really "photograph friendly".  =)   I'm glad I got a lot during the winter when they're gorgeous.  The squirrels tend to lose some fur from their tails, but I can still take pictures.

We've had a ton of rain during the last few weeks, everything is really growing, and the birds and squirrels seem very happy.

5-9-09

We feed the birds and squirrels around 8:00 each morning, and they all come and wait.  The birds are getting very brave and when we're out there, they will come and eat with us there, and the squirrels will get withing petting distance.  So fun!

4-18-09

We have some Catbirds again.  They haven't come for a few years now, and I like them because they really do make sounds like a cat mewing.  They also like to take lots of baths which is fun to watch, too.

4-8-09

I saw my first little squirrel babies come to our feeders this morning.  They don't really climb up to eat, but play around the feeding area while the mother eats.

They sure have a lot of energy...

3-23-09

We have two pregnant squirrels that like to come to the feeders together.  When we put the food out in the mornings, we usually get one of them, then she comes up and checks out the food and then takes off.  She comes back with her friend and they actually share the feeding area, which is very unusual.

Friendship is great!

3-13-09

Living in rural Mississippi, we have some wild cats that live in our neighborhood, and some are under our house.  I like cats, but NOT around my feeders.

When they come, I shoo them away, and they walk away, not run, because I'm shooing them from my kitchen window.

There was a new cat sitting in the yard, and I started my shooing, and it came over to the window, sat down and started talking with me for a long time.  Well, because it was so friendly, I let it stay until it got bored and went home.

Maybe if the other cats would come and talk, I wouldn't be so quick to make them go away.  =)

3-5-09

We have two pregnant squirrels who come to our feeders everyday, and they are both very hungry all of the time.  Today when I went to put the food out, one squirrel was out there waiting, and when I put the food out, she came right up to me and started eating the food I had just put down.

I'm flattered when they come over to me.  =)

2-27-09

We can know when rainy weather is coming by watching the birds and squirrels.  When it's going to rain, they all come to the feeders at the same time and there is lots of trying to be the one who gets to eat on the feeders.  They give each other dirty looks, hiss at each other, and they try to shoo the squirrels away.

It's actually pretty comical.

2-23-09

This morning we had a flock of Cedar Waxwings come and eat all the berries left on our hedges.  There were about 50 of them, flying all over the bushes.  Our regular birds just sat and watched until they flew away.

2-22-09

I love how when the birds are on my feeders, they won't tolerate anyone from the same species to eat with them, yet are ok with the Sparrows!

Squirrels don't seem to mind the birds, but the birds are afraid to get near the squirrels, and try to sneak when the squirrel isn't looking.

2-11-09

I saw a Male Cardinal feed a Female Cardinal, and looked it up on the internet.  It's called Mate Feed, and it's a courting ritual that lasts through the egg incubation.  The male gets some food, the female taps her beak on his, then takes the food.  Nice !  =)

2-2-09

As I was outside getting ready to feed the birds and squirrels I noticed a squirrel on the post right by the feeders.  He was on his tummy with his feet tucked under him, very comfortable and not afraid as he watched me.

I talked to him and he saw the food and seemed like he was going to come down and come over to me, but instead he jumped onto a tree and took off.  Just a few seconds later, he came back, WITH A FRIEND !!!   I thought that was very nice of him to want to share the food !!!

1-22-09

When I went out to feed the birds and squirrels today, there was a Cardinal just standing very still on the ground.  I talked to it softly and kept walking towards it and it didn't move. I called my husband out and he brought his gloves ready to move the bird to higher ground so wild cats wouldn't get it.   I stood there for a while talking to it, and slowly it started to move it's head and opened it's beak.  It cocked it's head and looked up at us and took a few steps, then flew to the hedges.  I guess it had flown into our window and was in a daze.  Glad to see that it's ok.

1-13-09

My birds are afraid of new foods.  They eat wild bird food and sunflower seeds and whole wheat bread.

It's cold here and they're very hungry, so I thought I'd take out some left over popcorn.  They would land and fly right off.  They sat in the trees just staring down at their food, so I went back outside in the cold and removed each piece.

Guess not everyone likes popcorn!

I haven't noticed any migrating birds at my feeders so far this year.  Last year we got some really wonderful birds who stopped by to eat.

We haven't been very cold here this winter, but the birds and squirrels seem to be eating a lot more each day.  Maybe they know colder weather is on the way.

12-31-08

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hoping 2009 will be good for everyone!

12-22-08

Hope everyone has a good Christmas!

We got down to 12 degrees here in Mississippi this morning, pretty cold for us.

The birds and squirrels don't seem to mind much at all.

I'm starting a whole new area in my Squirrel Gifts and Bird Gifts shop.  I have lots of birds that are the State Bird of several states.  I'll make a whole series on the states.  I'm still trying to get a good picture of our Mockingbird, it's the state bird of 5 states.  I already have the Cardinal done and the American Goldfinch.

Check them out!

12-13-08

There is a baby Mockingbird who's been coming around for the last few days and seems very shy.  When we do get new birds coming to the feeders, the other long time birds try to show who's boss.  Pretty soon they all get along, and I'm sure this Mockingbird will be one of the "old timers" soon.

12-7-08
We have several Pecan trees in our yard, and LOTS of squirrels.  They're very busy right now burying their Pecans for the winter.  They are pretty tame and you can get really close to them, and they'll sit and listen to us talking to them.

12-3-08
I can see by my squirrels, that cold weather is coming.  They are starting to get the little white tufts behind their ears.

The birds are really eating a lot lately, and becoming very pushy trying to get the food.

We have a LARGE quantity of Cardinals this year, their color is really getting to be a deep red.  Beautiful !

Christmas is coming, and I have lots of gifts in my CafePress store with pictures of squirrels and birds put on coffee mugs, keepsake boxes, framed prints, t-shirts and more.

There is also a section with Christmas Cards, ornaments, and Holiday gifts.

Enjoy!
